Hawsons Iron Project granted Major Project Status

Senator the Hon Michaelia Cash, Minister for Jobs and Innovation and the Hon Mark Coulton MP Assistant Minister for Trade, Tourism and Investment announced the granting of Major Project Status to the Hawsons Iron Project being developed by Carpentaria Resources Limited. The new magnetite mine will be located approximately 60km south west of Broken Hill. The $1.7 billion project will bring significant employment opportunities to the Far West region of NSW, including 1200 construction jobs to develop the mine site and supporting infrastructure, with a further 500 ongoing jobs over the mine’s life. The project will produce around 10 million tonnes per annum of high-grade magnetite over an estimated 20 year period. Ore from the mine will be processed on site and transported to Broken Hill via a pipeline where it will be transported by rail to Port Pirie (or Whyalla), South Australia for export. The high grade magnetite, called Hawsons Supergrade product is the world’s highest iron content steel making raw material and offers significant energy and emissions savings in the steel making process due to its chemical properties.
